Dark Mode Off / On

The Oscars are this weekend! Who is excited? I AM! We have seen most of the “Best Picture” nominated films. There are 2 that we have not seen. So I decided this called for a Oscar Movie Screening Party! I wanted to join my Couch Critics and tell what I thought!

First Things First! We need snacks! I have been wanting to try the Orville Redenbacher’s Pop Up Bowls. This is the perfect snack for our Screening Party. We headed to !Walmart. Take a look at our shopping trip on Whrrl.

You can see we had fun getting our snacks. The whole family was excited to see how the Pop Up Bowls work! I took pictures of the fun.

That was FUN! Now I am ready for a movie! One movie we have not seen is “The Kids Are All Right.” I had no idea what it was about! Honestly–no clue! But I knew that it was nominated for an Oscar so I said we have to see it. I tried 3 redbox and none offered this movie. Luckily it was on Pay Per View. So we sat down with our Popcorn and got comfy. My husband got the movie ready and…. It was rated R.   Bummer! I am very careful with what my kids watch so we did not push play since we were  sitting in the living room with our kids. We decided to watch “American Idol” until they went to sleep. Then we could watch the movie.

What did I think of The Kids Are Alright?  Well to be honest it is not a movie I will ever watch again. It is not a movie I will suggest to friends and family. Why? This is because there are so many scenes in this movie that were disturbing to me. This is completely personal. Some of the many issues included in this movie are drug use, sex, trying to find ones identity, emotional abuse, unfaithfulness, family, loyalty, friendship, affairs, and alcoholism. With the language and nudity in this movie it made me very uncomfortable.

As far as the actors and actresses in the movie go I was impressed. I have never seen Annette Bening and Julianne Moore in a role like this before. They are very passionate and portray their characters in a moving way.

Here is a description of The Kids Are Alright from Focus Features website.

Nic and Jules (three-time Academy Award nominee Annette Bening and four-time Academy Award nominee Julianne Moore) are married and share a cozy suburban Southern California home with their teenage children, Joni and Laser (Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson). Nic and Jules – or, when referred to jointly by Joni, “Moms” – gave birth to and raised their children, and built a family life for the four of them. As Joni prepares to leave for college, 15-year-old Laser presses her for a big favor. He wants Joni, now 18, to help him find their biological father; the two teenagers were conceived by donor insemination.

Against her better judgment, Joni honors her brother’s request and manages to make contact with “bio-dad” Paul (Mark Ruffalo), an easygoing restaurateur. The kids find themselves drawn to the confirmed bachelor’s footloose style – especially in contrast to Nic, a principled doctor who has long established their house rules. Jules, who has been looking to start a new career in landscaping, also strikes up a rapport with Paul. As Paul comes into the lives of the forthright four, an unexpected new chapter begins for them as family ties are defined, re-defined, and then re-re-defined.

The Kids Are All Right is up for these nominations at the 83 Academy Awards:

  • Annette Bening for Actress in a Leading Role
  • Best Picture
  • Writing
  • Mark Ruffalo Actor in a Supporting Role

On a personal level I do not like this movie. On a professional level this movie includes some strong acting. I can see why Annette Bening and Mark Ruffalo are up for nominations for their acting. I can also see how the movie is up for Best Picture and Writing nominations. However, I have seen most of the other nominated movies for Best Picture and I would not vote for The Kids Are Alright to win over the others. Many of the others are better in my opinion.
