Dark Mode Off / On

Last week I had the honor of having the upcoming movie “Homerun” sent to me to view before it is released in theaters. I jumped at the opportunity because I love to see movies like this that can make a real difference in the lives and souls of people. If this is the first you are hearing about the movie let me give you a little basic information about it.

Based on thousands of true stories, HOME RUN is a powerful reminder that with God, it’s never too late … freedom is possible.

Baseball all-star Cory Brand knows what it takes to win in the big leagues. But off the field, with memories of his past haunting him, his life is spiraling out of control.

Hoping to save her client’s career and reputation after a DUI and a team suspension, Cory’s agent sends him back to the small town where he grew up. Forced to coach the local youth baseball team and spend eight weeks in the only recovery program in town, Cory can’t wait to return to his old life as quickly as possible.

As his young players help him experience the joy of the game, Cory discovers his need to find freedom from his past and hope for his future … and win back the love he left behind. With this unexpected second chance, Cory finds himself on a powerful journey of transformation and redemption.

I attend the local Church of Christ. It is small but we have large number of family at the same stage in their life as my family is. We are parents of young children (ages 3-middle school), we range from those who are engaged to those who have been married 13+ years, and as a whole we are all still trying to find our way and live the best life we can and glorify God. I was able to spend Friday night fellowshipping with some of these dear friends and then we watched Home Run together.

Home Run Preview

This movie was intense at moments and hit on tough subjects. Some of the older kids did sit and watch parts of it with us. It really was something that captured us all and hit us all in some way or another. When it was over we discussed the movie and I was touched by the responses.

The moment when Cory realized he could not do it alone was a favorite of many of us. No mater what addiction or issue we have had in our lives we have all felt we could handle it alone. Only when we gave up total control and said “Ok I can not do this alone.” or “Help!” or simply “I don’t know what to do to fix this” were we able to start the healing and rebuilding in our lives.

My dear friend Melody shared this and allowed me to share it with you:

“It truly portrayed moments of brokenness that I have felt myself. The fight within anyone suffering in life, not just with their demons and/or addictions but also with God as well represented in Homerun. I really appreciate being able to watch this movie exactly where I am in life today. I hope that this movie can touch someone that needs to hear this message. It truly is a blessing to so many in recovery today.”

One thing that we noticed about this movie as it compared to other Christian movies, such as Fireproof or Courageous, was that there was not a lot of preaching or reminding Cory he needed God. It was all done in the loving and quiet way that most of us need. The Pastor was the one to sign off on his 12 step program stay. But he was more than a Program Director, he was Cory’s friend and was the one there when Cory realized I can NOT do this alone. He guided him without preaching to him. And that loving and quiet guidance was what helped Cory feel God’s presence. God works like that! On Cory’s way to building a better life he found himself giving God the credit and finding forgiveness for others and himself.

My friend Mollie shared this:

“I thought it was a great movie that will be able to reach out to just about everyone. I think it spoke out that everyone has demons in their closet no matter how big it small God is there for you and with him on your side you can start to recover.”

This movie is also for those you have been affected by other’s addictions and not necessarily with your own addiction. I loved that it showed how huge of an impact his addiction had on those around him. Those who wanted to love and forgive him and yet kept feeling rejected and hurt. Cory was so lost in his situation he was not thinking of those who loved him and what they were experiencing. The movie does a beautiful job of showing how they loved him, rejected him and ultimately forgave him.

My friend Laura had this to share:

“They did a great job of portraying the struggles between will and self and just how difficult it is to overcome. Not just with alcohol or other substances but with our past and how that absolutely affects the person we become but that even that can be changed if we will it too. It didn’t just speak to those with addiction problems but also with dealing with an abusive past and how to properly overcome all of life’s hardships by trusting in the one who created us and knows us better than we know ourselves. Looking forward to seeing this movie again and I am adding it to my favorites!”

As a whole we thought this movie hit a Home Run in many areas and can touch people no mater what they have been through. We all have demons, addictions or something that tries to take over our lives at times (or all the time).

This movie is about them. It is about me. It is about you!

We all agreed everyone can feel something in the watching of this movie! I am thankful that through movies like this people can be reached who would not dare step foot in a church. I pray that God will work miracles through the quiet love and story of Home Run!

I encourage you to pray about this!
