This post is brought to you by GoldieBlox and The Motherhood, who sent me a box of products and compensated me for my time. Opinions, experiences, and photos shared here are all my own, and I hope you enjoy them. I only share products that I support and love!
We have stereotypes from the day we are born about what we should enjoy or excel at.
Boys are supposed to like blue, building things, sports, science, taking things apart, seeing how things work, etc.
Girls are supposed to like cooking, reading, gardening, teaching, dolls, playing mom, etc.
I am a misfit! I like math. No, scratch that. I LOVE math. I have always loved numbers, problems, challenges, and finding X. I like girly things like sparkles and make-up. But I can go without it. I am fairly simple and low maintenance. I hate cooking. I am not a good teacher. I have a black thumb. But I LOVE watching sports, building things, and oh how I love seeing how things work.
You know what? My daughter is a misfit too. And I love it. I want her to embrace her passions. I see her challenge stereotypes all the time.
She does not like dolls. She has owned maybe two in her lifetime and they just sat. She has never played with Barbies. She doesn’t play school or ‘mommy’ like most girls. She would much rather play a game. She loves playing softball. Like seriously, LOVES it!
She is obsessed with creating things, building things, and pushing the envelope. She likes science. Don’t get me wrong, she likes some girly things. She like dresses, sparkles, and bows in her hair, but she is going to finish off the outfit with flip flops or boots.
My son on the other hand, hates sports. He has no desire to play. We tried baseball last year and he hated it, so we learned it was not for him. He loves helping me cook and doing art. I am still learning what he likes, but I foresee that he will challenge stereotypes too!
I love when companies realize I problem exists that no one else sees. GoldieBlox is one of those companies. They realized the need for girls to embrace building things and letting their creativity take flight. Their pairing of story + construction builds confidence while giving girls the tools they need to build and create amazing things. I support what they are doing and it is a HUGE HIT in this house!
The GoldieBlox Builder’s Survival Kit and Goldie Action Figure provided hours of fun for the two of us. My daughter and I had fun connecting, building, solving, engineering, and creating things. I am thrilled to see a toy that is made for girls but is not what most would consider girly! It is challenging those stereotypes. I believe that these products will help girls continue to hold on to their passion. Ultimately, they could become an engineer or enter another field that is predominantly men. What a remarkable thought. Products like this are a must in this house!
“In a world where men largely outnumber women in science, technology, engineering and math, girls lose interest in these subjects as early as age 8. Construction toys develop an early interest in these subjects, but for over a hundred years, they’ve been considered “boys’ toys.” GoldieBlox is determined to change the equation. We aim to disrupt the pink aisle and inspire the future generation of female engineers.” -GoldieBlox
Will we fail? SURE we will. While she worked on building the drum set, she experienced that. Together we would start over and get it right. It is so important for her to learn that failure is not the end! It is just a curve in the road. We talked about my failures. I fail all the time! But it gives me the push I need to keep going and try again. She has that same fire. I hope she never loses it! GoldieBlox encourages this too!
I believe that this generation has more freedom than ours and the one before us to be themselves. We see women taking positions of power and roles previously left to the men. More women are working outside the home by choice. We see men taking on roles and designers, cooks, and fashion experts. More men are staying home with the kids. How amazing that is!
I hope that we continue as a nation and as parents to encourage our children to challenge gender stereotypes. They are no boundaries. I am thankful for GoldieBlox for helping our girls strive to be more and do more!
