Finding Balance As A Work At Home Mom

balance work and life
I sat here tonight planning out my week and felt totally overwhelmed! Then a word came to mind: balance.

“Balance is a state of equilibrium or equipoise; equal distribution of weight, amount, etc. or the mental steadiness or emotional stability; habit of calm behavior, judgment, etc.” Dictonary.com

I have been a full time “work outside the home mom” and I have been a full time “stay at home mom” but now I am a full time “work at home mom“. I have to say having been in all 3 positions this one is the toughest!

As a mom who worked outside the home I thought it was challenging. I didn’t have enough time with my kids. But the plus was that the kids were having a blast while I was at work. I was able to pay for good child care where they developed friendships and had constant attention. On the weekend we could just play. There was always the battle of housework. But since both mom and dad worked it was a known fact we all had to pitch in.

As a stay at home mom I felt like my life revolved around diapers, tantrums and singing silly songs. The intellectual stimulation was non existent but things round the house ran smoothly. Dinner was ready when my husband got home, the kids had all my attention, I had time for friends and church. The things that really mattered to me. But I missed working and the creative and mental challenges that came with it.

Then I started pursuing my work at home job of blogging and social media. I prayerfully worked on it and watched it bloom into a paying job. Last year my dream job appeared and now I work 40 hours a week for an amazing company and have my blog and freelance for examiner.com. It is awesome! The kids are home with me and I am doing what I love!

Here comes the hard part that makes me lose sleep. Balance! There is no balance! Some days I feel like I am failing at everything! Trying to balance being a good mom, wife, friend, coworker, employee, business owner, writer, and everything else on my plate is hard!

I want to do it all and do it all GREAT! Sometimes I think…Do I pick what I am going to do awesome and do the rest with what is left?

No that is not me! I have to give 100% to everything I do. That means I have to make time for it all. And even eliminate the things that don’t matter as much.

As I sat here tonight I made a list. (I love lists!) I wrote down the top 4 things in my life right now. 4 is an easier number than all 25 or so things I was worrying about. Now those 4 things I can work on balancing.

As moms and women in general we were made to multitask. We can do many things and do them all well. So I encourage all the other work at home moms to do the same.

  • Pick your top 4.
  • Make a calendar. I use google calendar because it is in my phone and computer. It can also be shared!
  • Mark time for each of your priorities.
  • If you work 40 hours a week or make up your own hours put them on there. Block them as office hours. (Don’t feel bad about hiring a sitter or sending your child somewhere for those hours. )
  • Then block times for the other important things in your life. Make time for your kids without work. Make time for friends. Make time for your husband. Block those things in your calendar. Share it with coworkers if need be.
  • Make sure everything in your top four has a time and a place in your week.
  • Stick to your calendar!

If there is a time set in your week for everything that is important you will find a balance. You deserve to be successful AND have a happy personal life! You can do it!

A Year of Faith Testers, Doubt Busters & A Dream Come {A Look Back & Moving Forward}

The other day I was chatting with my mother in law about this year. We were discussing God’s provision and timing this year. This year has been full of ups and downs. I said it had been a year of “faith testers.” She said “or doubt busters.” I love that! Yes it was BOTH! Here is a short recap:

We updated the kitchen to get ready to sell it.

We moved with the plan of reaching financial freedom.

The people backed out and did us wrong. We moved back into our home to find vandalism

We spent the next 3 months living in a hotelwhile our home was renovated.

We moved back home.  YEAH!!!!

And  we had a car accident

We had marriage problems during this time. Who wouldn’t? I spent a lot of timing driving back and forth and taking care of the kids alone while my husband dealt with work and all the house problems.  I went into a bad place. My faith was very strong but that didn’t keep me from falling into a depression. It was very hard on us all. Yes all of those very challenging things happened this year. BUT my husband and I kept the faith! I decided my life motto should be :

“God I don’t get this…but I trust you!”

By September we had moved back home and tried getting back into a normalcy. Our marriage was stronger than ever. I slowly came out of my depression. I was thankful! I knew that God brought us home for a reason and he would provide a way for this house. I told everyone that. I believe in speaking things into your life. If you believe it you can see it!

That is when miracles began to happen in our lives. We were literally living on LOVE and CENTS! We received monetary and non monetary gifts that showed up at just the right moment. When we needed something the most it appeared from people that didn’t even know how much we needed it. People were so giving in ways that they could give. That was GOD!

There were times that this blog was serious therapy for me. It kept me busy and YOU, the readers, made me smile and gave me joy!

I started working as a Campaign Leader for Collective Bias and shortly after started working wit the AMAZING cbSocially team. Read all about that journey here.  I have said over and over how much I love  this company! This was an ANSWERED PRAYER! It is a way to do what I love every day, work with amazing people and bring in an income for my family. I KNEW God would provide a way!

Living on Love and Cents as grown and now I have other very talented bloggers bringing your creative content. I am so excited to have them on this team! If you are interested in joining our team we are always taking applications here.

I like goals because they give you something to work toward. This year I want to really focus on this site and making it what YOU want it to be. “At Least He Is Wearing Pull Ups!” Celebrating Steps In Potty Training #HuggiesWalmart #Cbias

Those are words I never thought I would say! My son, who is 3, is still in the process of potty training. I am now at the point where I am PROUD that he is wearing pull ups! Just last week when someone said “Is he still wearing diapers? He is not trained yet?” I turned to them and this flew out of my mouth:

“At least he is wearing pull ups.”

Why on earth would a mom be bragging and proud that their child is in Pull Ups? Well I will tell you why. After months of trying and trying my son is finally ready to learn to go potty. When we reached this milestone we could switch from the standard diapers to pull ups. For me this was a huge step up. This meant that he would have more independence when using the potty. This is a HUGE step closer to real underwear. I was proud!

Price: What I’ve Learned

After 3 solid years of diapers I can say I have tried them all. I’ve tried the store brands, the cheaper brands and the expensive brands. I have discovered that Huggies are the most reliable and affordable. I get Huggies coupons in the mail and online and considering how much better they hold up they are the best buy for my budget. When you combine the coupons and the Walmart Rollback price for Pull-Ups Training Pants that is available in-store and online you can guarantee a perfect price. When you are buying as often as I am the price is HUGE! I buy a pack a week so I have to have affordable and reliable brands. I can tell many stories about trying off brands and ending up with horrible messes! It is not worth it! You want and need quality!

Pull-Ups = Independence

My oldest is now 6 and she was a breeze to train. We actually went from diapers to panties! So this world with my son was brand new. It has been frustrating and exhausting! There have been many days when I thought I would be changing diapers forever. I decided that had to change! I was fed up with cleaning up bottoms and changing wet diapers! When he started wearing Pull Up Training Pants it did help. He had a new found freedom. He was now able to stand up like Daddy and pull down pants like Daddy too. The smile was awesome to see and it really helped with encouraging him to try. This was a turning point for us! Huggies Training Pants helped us turn a major corner!

The Next Step

A week ago I decided I wanted to take the next step. I took little man to Walmart with me and told him about the NEW plan! Starting this week he was going to wear Pull Up Training Pants at night time ONLY! It was time to step it up and wear real underwear. At Walmart I let him pick out a special poo-poo seat. He was excited to pick out a sear just for him. Mickey Mouse was the winner.
As with any training with a young kid you need an incentive or prize. I highly recommend finding something that works for your child. It is Christmas time and my little man is crazy about candy canes so that is what I decided on. As soon as we got home and while he was still excited I showed him his potty training tools and explained it again. This was everything we needed to finally get him trained.

What’s Now?

We will continue to use Pull Ups until he masters the day time can hold it at night. But until then I am still proud to say “At least he is wearing Pull-Ups.”
