Last week I had the most remarkable experience! I was able to chat with Taya Smith of Hillsong United. What? I am still pinching myself. For me, this was more exciting than meeting a movie star! In our house we always have music playing. One of my daughter’s favorite songs to play over and over on YouTube is Hosanna by Hillsong.
Music is such a big part of our lives. Whether praising in worship or cleaning the house, you will hear us singing. So when this opportunity presented itself, I leaped at the chance! It was a special moment that I will never forget.
One thing that resonated with me was her words about creating a space for God. She told us about something that her Pastor said to her this week. He asked
“Where is the place that you have carved out to meet with God?” Just like Jesus did in Luke 5:16, “But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” We should have a special time or place for prayer.
She realized it could be any place. Take 5 minutes a day. She asked herself,
“Are you really too busy or do you just need to make a space?”
This is so true! As much as Jesus understood the value of praying with and for others, He also understood the need to pray alone. Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Sometimes it’s important for us to be still before God. In our crazy lives, the only time to be still is to set aside a time and place to do so.
She also carries this idea over to her creative needs. “To be creative you need to make a space and be consistent. Create a time and a space to hear from God.” She went on to say
He is the creator of the universe. He has the best ideas ever! – Taya Smith
OH I LOVE THAT! I want to print it out and hang it on my desk as a reminder. Whether trying to decide what to write about, how to be a better mom or wife, or whether to move. He has the best answers! We just need to be still and listen!
She also mentioned that the more time you spend with Jesus, the more you realize how much you need him. She said something that I think holds true to all of us.
“I am still pouring out, but I am not filling up. I’m running on empty”
Guess who can fill you up? Jesus can! He can give you all the strength you need. When she feels like she is not enough. she remembers that God is in control!
“God has called me to this & He’s going to grace me for it. It’s never just you alone. I learn it again & again”
