At some point or another, you’ll want to get your first dog. As exciting as this could be, though, you’ll need to make sure you’re actually responsible. Owning a dog takes a lot more time, effort, and hard work than you’d think.

With the right tips, though, getting and having your first dog shouldn’t be nearly as hard as you’d think.

Consider Adopting

Countless people end up getting their dog from a breeder or somewhere similar. But, this isn’t always the best approach to take. Adopting a dog from a shelter can often be a much better one. You’ll still find a dog you’ll love, but you’ll end up completely changing a shelter dog’s life.

These dogs would’ve either been homeless, neglected, or even both. Once you’re able to properly take care of them, they’ll end up giving you more love than you would’ve thought.

Be Safe Around Other Dogs

Your dog will end up being around other ones quite a bit, especially when you’re taking them to dog parks and similar areas. You’ll need to be safe with this. It could take time for your pet to learn to socialize with other dogs and play safely, so keep that in mind going forward. Introducing them to other dogs slowly is recommended.

Then there’s other dogs’ behavior. Not all of them will be as well-socialized as they should be. This could result in an accident, or you or your dog getting hurt. Avoid this as much as you can, but look into a dog bite injury lawyer and similar help if you end up needing it.

Pick the Right Breed for You

Once you’ve decided to get a dog, it’s worth making sure you get the right breed for you. This can often be one of the more overlooked factors, since most people tend to go based on how the dog looks and seems to behave. But, it has a major impact on how they can affect your lifestyle.

Some dogs will need noticeably more exercise than others, for example. If you don’t have the time to exercise them regularly, they mightn’t be the best option for you. Spend a little time comparing breeds before making a decision.

Nurture Their Mental & Emotional Health

You’ll already know you need to look after your dog’s physical health. It’s why you’ll walk them regularly and make sure you’re getting the best food possible for them. But, you’ll also need to make sure you’re looking after their mental and emotional health, too. This takes time, but it doesn’t have to be too hard.

Playing games with them, giving them food puzzles to try, and similar steps can help with this. There’s no reason why this should take too much time, and it’ll even be a bit of fun for you, too.

It’ll take a little time and effort to find and get your first dog. But, that doesn’t need to mean it has to be. All it takes is the right steps, and there’ll be nothing to worry about.
