Gonzales Texas Is A Small Town With Big Charm and History. Right in the middle is a hotel FULL of tons of charm and history! We had the opportunity to stay at the Alcalde Hotel in Gonzales and I am so excited to share about this amazing hotel!
Hotel Alcalde in Gonzales Texas: Come for the history. Stay for the service!
If you’re looking for a personal experience, that is full of history, is family oriented, has large spacious rooms, offers fresh hot meals, and the top in luxury and comfort look no further than The Hotel Alcalde. You really feel like you have stepped back in time. But at the same time it has been updated to offer the my favorite modern day services (A.C., Keurig, WiFi, etc.) A delicious, hot dinner and breakfast in the dining room are complimentary with your room.
The Alcalde Hotel History
Early in the 1900’s, a couple named Aref and Helen Droupy immigrated to the U. S. to find a better life. They and their 7 children made Gonzales, Texas home. The Alcalde Hotel was originally built in 1926 as a three-story hotel with forty rooms, a coffee shop, dining room, and a barbershop. The Droupy family and their children and grandchildren ran the hotel and coffee shop for over 70 years.
In 1977, Granddaughter Deidra Droupy Voight took over the Alcalde and ran it until 1998 when she began working at the Texas State Capitol in Austin for state representative for Gonzales, Rick Green. As fate would have it that connection was a big one in the Alcalde history!
Rick Green and his wife bought The Alcalde in 2013 and worked to return the hotel to its historical status of the “grand dame hotel” of Gonzales.
Not only has The Alcalde Hotel been a standing for almost 100 years and remains one of the most beautiful buildings in Texas, it is full of American history and folk lore. Read more from a family member on the full history of the Alcalde Hotel.
Bonnie & Clyde once stayed at the Alcalde and had to escape out the window to escape in the early morning hours when the law showed up. The Alcalde has set up their room as a guest room so others can stay in THAT room. You can look out that very window that they jumped out. Here is the alley they jumped into.
There are newspaper articles and stories to learn more about them during your stay!
Elvis Presley stayed at the Alcalde multiple times during his days as part of the Louisiana HayRide. His room is now available for others to stay. It is fully decorated with Elvis memorabilia and is a must see!
The Alcalde Hotel Hospitality!
Really this hotel is more like a bed and breakfast experience than it is a hotel experience. The manager and employees make sure that you are personally well taken care of.
Your room rate includes 2 meals a day! At the Alcalde Grille they serve up good ole southern cooking meals. We enjoyed breakfast and dinner every day and it was amazing! No bulk or out of the box meals. Everything is cooked fresh each day and the menu items are sure to impress. We enjoyed chicken an dumplings, chicken mole with rice and beans (that had been cooked for hours to perfection) for dinner. And for breakfast we had potatoes, eggs, and bacon/ sausage. They also offer up some continental favorites if that is your preference. They are flexible with the hours if you need an early or late preference just let them know.
But wait, there is more! They have their eating area open at all times for your enjoyment of snacks and drinks. There is a soda machine and snacks available all day at no extra cost.
AND COFFEE! Y’all know how I feel about my coffee several times a day. I am so excited to say that there is coffee everywhere. They have Keurig machines in the rooms and also in the hallway, eating area, and lobby. Wherever you feel the need for a drink you can brew up some hot tea or coffee. They also include cookies and microwave popcorn throughout the hotel as well. This small thing was HUGE for me!
The Alcalde Hotel Comfort!
OK! So now. What about the rooms? They are excellent. We stayed in the Presidential Suite and it was very large. So if you are a fan of space you should check those out. For a family of 4 or with small children the standard rooms would also work great.
We toured some of the rooms and what I thought was neat was that each room was unique in the decor and even the layout. This is another things that makes It more like a Bed and Breakfast than a hotel.
The rooms have top amenities including microwave, mini fridge, super soft bedding and pillows, toiletries, plush towels. I could really tell that each detail was very important to them and no detail was too small!
Whether you are looking for a hotel or bed and breakfast in Gonzales. The Alcalde Hotel is perfect!
