Dark Mode Off / On

Have strange things been occurring in your home? Are you confused as to what may be causing them? Well, don’t despair because they are very unlikely to be caused by a ghost. Instead, the reason for these occurrences could be pests. Read on to find out what to look out for!

Droppings

Most people think that pest droppings mean they have an issue with rodents like mice or rats. While that can be true, there are some other droppings or pellets to look out for as well including frass or termite droppings. These small pellets are easy to recognise as they are oval-shaped and they have six sides.

If you find frass in your home you likely have a termite infestation. Unfortunately, termites can cause all sorts of trouble in the home including structural damage and hygiene issues. That is why it’s best to get rid of the infestation as effectively and quickly as possible. Usually, the best way to do this is to contact termite control professionals like Terminix and ask them to come to your home and assess it. They will then be able to offer you the best course of action with the latest equipment and technology that will ensure the most effective removal of any termites from your property.

Unusual smells

If you can detect a strange smell then you may be dealing with a pest infestation. For example, rats are known to leave behind the smell of ammonia in their excretions which is highly unpleasant. Rat dropping as well as their urine, and salvia (including that on bedding) can also carry extremely dangerous diseases such as hantavirus, Leptospirosis, and even Bubonic plague!

That is why you must do all you can to avoid such an infestation in the first place. There are many things you can do to avoid getting infested by rats including cutting them off from potential food sources. This means keeping your bins clean and tidy, and properly storing your food and food for your pets so they cannot get into it.  It is also a good idea to minimise any areas in which rats could build a nest, so that means cutting back bushes and shrubs regularly.

Strange marks on your walls

Noticed some brown marks or streaks on your walls lately? Then you could be dealing with cockroaches. Cockroaches have long been associated with poor hygiene and poor quality living spaces, and they are notoriously hard to kill. They are also known to spread some serious diseases that can be a real threat to humans such as gastroenteritis and salmonella.

The best way to prevent cockroaches from coming into your home in the first place is to make sure it’s well sealed from the outside. This means plugging up any drafts or possible entryways.

Cockroaches also enjoy eating rotten food, so be sure to keep all your edible items properly stored, and correctly manage your trash. Last of all, good hygiene will always help you keep your home free of roaches, although if you do spy one using a bug bomb according to the instructions or calling a professional is usually the best course of action.
