It matters where you look

Before posting on Facebook, looking on Craigslist, looking on PetFinder, or local shelter sites stop and think. Is it is a reputable organization or someone who has no credibility?

To rescue or to buy

You may be tempted to get a cute pure breed pup from a breeder. While that may be what works for you, it was not a fit for me. When working with a breeder you cannot be certain what you will get. Some are great and really care while some are just in it for the money and have bad conditions.

The same may be said for some rescues, however most good rescues are not in it for the money. The cost is much less for those looking to adopt from a rescue so they don’t make as much as a breeder. Generally rescues have already had the pet spayed or neutered, brought the pet up to date on all shots, checked for major health issues, and started treatment if needed.

Research the rescue

So you decided to adopt from a rescue? Look online for reviews? Do they have a good reputation? Check on Facebook for people who have adopted from them? Have they had issues? Find out what they require for you to adopt and what their fees are and what those fees cover.

Research the breed

Before committing to a dog research the breed as well. Some breeds are naturally hyper or need lots of room to run and play. Some are hyper allergenic and some shed a lot. Some are made to hunt and some are very fragile. This is important to know so you can decide if you have the time, space, and ability to meet their needs.

Ask lots of question

There are lots of Things You Should Know Before Rescuing a Dog. So before agreeing to anything ask questions! Check out this great list of what to ask before you adopt a dog.

Is there a return or trial period

So I have determined that this is so important. have been wanting a little companion for ever but I knew we needed a very specific little one to be our perfect fit. I ended up choosing a rescue that ONLY did foster to adopt and this was huge! My Chi and Me Rescue in Houston does a foster to adopt program so that you can take a pet home and make sure he or she is a fit before making the commitment to adopt. The owner took all my info and she said before I arrived she knew who I would love. And she was right! This program was perfect for me!

If you can’t find a foster to adopt rescue ask what happened if the pet is not a fit. Things you may not expect like it doesn’t like your kids or pets. Maybe you find that you are allergic to it. Or it requires more stimulation or exercise than you can give.

Expect the unexpected

Once home it may take a little while for your dog to be comfortable. Expect to have things come up that you didn’t think of. You may need to retrain your dog to go potty outside or to sleep in a crate. You may need to do some trail and error with food or where the dog stays when you are not home.

I learned about the rule of 3s: three days, three weeks, three months. Read more about that here. This is true. For the first week our dog acted like she was not a fan of toys or playing at all and only wanted to be with me. After 3 weeks she finally wanted to play and now she plays with my son and the ball daily! It is so cute!
