Steven Curtis Chapman’s newest album ReCreation hits the shelves this week. One song on this album has been playing on the Houston Christian station for a a couple months now. And I have to tell you when I first hear “Do Everything” come through the speakers I thought…”Has he been watching me?” Take a look at the first verse and you will see why…
You’re picking up toys on the living room floor
for the 15th time today
Matching up socks and sweeping up lost
Cheerios that got away
You put a baby on your hip and color on your lips
and head out the door
And while I may not know you I bet I know you
Wonder sometimes does it matter at all…
This is me on what seems like everyday! Especially lately I have had many days when I thought no one notices anything I do or that my life has no major impact on others. When I heard him sing about picking up the cheerios and laundry I laughed because that is exactly what many of my days include. Sometimes the entire day is picking up after the kids, entertaining the kids and then picking up again. And then if for some reason I do have to get out of the house I do exactly what he said, throw on some super simple make up and run out the door. I really do not give myself any extra thought at all! So you can see why I thought he must have been watching me when he wrote this verse!
All of this can cause many days to seem almost meaningless or lonely. But the song does not end at that verse (thank goodness)! Chapman goes on to say…
We’ll let me remind you it all matters just as long as you…
Do everything you do to the glory of the One who made you
Cause He made you to do
Every little thing that you do to bring a smile to His face
And tell the story of grace
With every move that you make
And every little thing you do
This chorus makes me smile and cry! I cry because how silly of me to think that any day is meaningless! And I smile because I am reminded of the great joy that each day brings and that God is the reason for that joy! Each day with my children is a true gift! And each holds a very special purpose! It is hard when you are in the middle of a day filled with scattered blocks, red juice spilled on the couch, temper tantrums, and then you discover your favorite cd is laying on the floor in two pieces. YES those days are hard! But in the midst of it all I have to remember that God gave me 2 precious gifts, my children. And THEY are my purpose right now. Because of this no day is meaningless!
This song touches my heart in so many ways. It is a wonderful reminder of the real reason we are here! We are here to show others Christ through us! We do this in our actions every single day. And those 2 little people that I am with everyday are watching me! Right now I need to show them Christ through me. When I give God the glory each day and show with the smile on my face that I am living for God, they see that! They will remember that! “Do everything for the glory”! That is powerful!
I love the line “Cause he made you to do every little thing that you do to bring a smile to His face and tell the story of grace, with every move that you make.” Every little move that I make should glorify him. It is very easy to forget about that when we are in the routine of our mundane lives. Doesn’t that make you think about cleaning up the spilled milk in a new light? Here is a short video by Steven Curtis Chapman telling about the CD and the story behind re:creation. The first couple minutes include “Do Everything.”
So my message to you is no mater what you are doing each day you must remember to give God the glory! Whether you are home cleaning for the 15th time today or you are sitting in your office overlooking the city you hold a very specific purpose! The days when it seems like your actions have no impact on others remember someone is watching! God made you very special and he made you to show others his love and grace through you!

Good morning,
Thank you for the inspiration you have given me this morning as I sit here in the cold, lonely office tower in Downtown Los Angeles. See, your post has far-reaching impact already and has caused me to reflect on each precious moment that we have been given. What a great review!
Love,
Me
