Make These Changes To Benefit Your Home’s Exterior

No matter what time of year is upon you and what the weather outside happens to be, it is always a good time to begin planning any updates or upgrades for your home and property. By doing these things in advance, you have the benefit of time – time to make decisions and the luxury of changing your mind, and time to look for the best deals or new ideas. Consider some of these areas in your home or on your property where you can get excited to make changes.

The notion of landscaping can be broad and vast, depending on who is discussing the topic. It can include anything from a simple mulch or rock refresh to a full-scale paver and deck project. In order to decide what action to take, go for a walk around your property and make note of what you like about its current state and what you would like to change. Look for these things:

  • Where does the morning or evening sun hit the yard?
  • Would you like more privacy?
  • Are new or more plants and trees in order?
  • What is the current state of your patio or deck?
  • Or, would you like a patio or deck?
  • What are your access points, such as walkways, gates, or exit doors?
  • Is the lighting sufficient?
  • Are there any safety issues?

Use these questions as a starting point to determine what you will do to upgrade your landscape. Your yard is an extension of your home, so why not make the most of it? Doors and Numbers

A quick and easy way to make a change to your exterior is by changing your door and house numbers. Assess the outside door and decide whether you still like the design and determine if they are still in good condition. If not, it is time to invest in a new door. This will save on energy costs both in the winter and summer as the door will fit properly with a good seal.

If your door is still good, go shopping for a new paint color and repaint the front door. This small act will give your home an instant change and update its style. After checking with neighborhood committees, such as homeowners associations, to determine restrictions on making exterior changes without approval, it is time to start painting. Opt for colors that provide contrast or seamlessly blend into your home. Purchase some paint samples and paint swatches onto paper. Once dry, hang them on the front door to get a feel for what you like best.

Your next step is to change the house numbers. For safety reasons purchase large numbers that can be seen from the road. This will help your friends find you, too. Try different colors, metals, or fonts to change the look and feel of your home with minimal commitment.

Having a well-lit home and property gives you an evening curb appeal like no other. When lighting is placed in all the right areas, it enhances your home and creates a nighttime ambiance.

In addition to adding character, proper lighting is essential for the safety of those living in the home as well as any visitors. Some common areas for lighting upgrades include:

  • Add recessed or puck lighting, as space allows, under overhangs in the front and back of the house.
  • Place solar-powered landscape lights along any walking paths or landscaped features such as flower beds and trees.
  • Install motion sensor lights in the backyard where the lights may be turned off unless in use.
  • Install a timer on your outdoor lights. With this feature, you can schedule the lights to go on when you are away or on a convenient schedule so you do not need to do it manually.
  • Be sure to add a light to highlight your new house numbers. This is both for aesthetic appeal and safety. When first responders are able to see your house numbers, they can find the house they need quicker in an emergency.
