Valentine’s Day is coming up and you know what that means- chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate! I love making a special treat for dessert on Valentine’s Day for after we devour our traditional heart shaped meatloaf, roasted red potatoes and heart shaped dinner buns (awww! so sweet) and a chocolate cake with this frosting is almost always what I make. Most of you don’t know me well enough to know that I really love to bake from scratch. But, sometimes scratch just isn’t going to happen! When I want to make something in a hurry or decide at the last minute that cake sounds really good, I will use a boxed cake mix and this delectable easy to make homemade chocolate frosting recipe. It whips up in a jiffy and is out of this world!

It’s really, REALLY good. And easy too 🙂 It makes enough to frost the top of a cake baked in a 9×13 inch pan, so if you are doing a layer cake I would double it to be sure I had enough frosting to go ’round. No skimpy frosting!

Hershey’s Perfectly Chocolate Frosting

  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 2/3 cup cocoa powder
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Pour the melted butter and cocoa powder into a bowl and mix together. Add the powdered sugar and milk alternately until the frosting reaches desired spreading consistency. Stir in vanilla.

It really is that simple and it tastes so, so good. Rich and creamy without any of the subtle “plastic” flavors that I can often detect in a can of frosting. Try it on cake, cupcakes, brownies, in between 2 cookies to make sandwich cookies or even spread on pieces of banana bread. Omgoodness. SO many good ways to use this frosting and treat your loved ones to a little extra something special this Valentine’s Day!
